House Speaker Threatens to Pass Health Care Bill Without Vote
(Mishawaka, IN) – Following months of declining public opinion polls and wavering support within their own Party, House Democrat leaders on Monday suggested that passage of the proposed health care bill could be achieved without members actually having to vote on the increasingly unpopular legislation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she preferred use of the procedure known as a “self-executing rule” because it would protect vulnerable House Democrats from casting a vote on a bill that polls show Americans oppose by a margin of 3 to 1.
Republican 2nd Congressional District Candidate Jackie Walorski denounced Pelosi’s proposal and called on Rep. Joe Donnelly to condemn the usage of underhanded tactics to pass such a significant bill.
“Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat House Leadership have hit a new low,” said Walorski. “In November we saw Rep. Donnelly vote in favor of a trillion dollar health care bill that is opposed by 3 out of 4 Americans. We’ve seen legislators being bought and sold. We’ve seen declining approval numbers and vulnerable Democrats jumping ship. And now we’re seeing Speaker Pelosi planning to pass what could be the most significant and far-reaching piece of legislation in a generation without a vote.”
“People in Northern Indiana deserve better than that,” said Walorski. “We deserve a clean up-or-down vote on this bill and I ask Rep. Donnelly to step forward and denounce these underhanded tactics.”
